"When you know your worth you'll start charging appropriately. "
How much is your time worth?
Do you value your own time as well as others?
At what cost, is it enough to leave your child with a babysitter?
At what cost, will you do something you really don't want to for the sake of a dollar?
For as long as I can remember I've had this strange relationship with money. I remember the day I realized that money could run out and the power of putting on a pretty dress and smile and asking for more. I remember the day I realized that if I asked for X it might very well mean that Z wasn't going to happen, because 'we can't afford both'. I remember when I said yes to something I didn't really want to do but an extra hundred in my pocket sounded good.
Money has controlled my life, it's caused me to do things I can't even fathomed now. It's affected my decisions and choices and caused me pain. But was it really just 'the money' - after all money is just currency, it's just energy. Two people can have a $100 bill and to one it means the world and the other it's not worth their time. It might as well be pennies. So what is it?
It's the value we place on money, on paper on coins - and in turn that value we place on ourselves and label it our worth. Whatever the trigger was for me at 11 years old - that woke me up to money and my naive thinking of where it came from stuck with me for years. It's become my mission to change my relationship with money and thereby help other women along the way too. Money mindset can truly mean the difference in YOU going for what you want and knowing that you deserve it or you putting off one more year because you don't think that you do.
Over the weekend, Boss Babes Brunch Club welcomed, Ashley Fierro - Celebrity make up artist and entrepreneur - she coached us on understanding the difference between value + worth. Value is simply math - how much something cost. 1+2= 3. No emotion. No story. Simple. Worth is much deeper - worth has legs, tentacles and stretches deep into our soul. It's tickled when you whisper it and aroused when asked. Worth is tied to our belief system - a system of stories we've sold ourselves so many times that they seem real. Worth is scary and touchy and uncomfortable.
"I'm telling you my girl, you better know your worth.. Everything that you want is yours..."
That is is exactly why it needs to be said. Your worth is only something you can measure - no one else has the right or the ability to put a number on that for you. It's a combination of what feels good, what it's value is to you and honestly what you might have to give up for it.
So, I challenge you to take a look inside and figure out your money story. What's keeping you from charging what you should? Whether it's higher or lower does it feel good? Are you sacrificing success because you're afraid or jeopardizing your success because you're afraid? You see they are two sides of the same coin - when you don't know your worth how can you expect others too.
Homework to figure out your pricing (finding value in your products + services):
1. Take a hard look at your business and your offerings - then do some research. Check out your competitors who are lower, higher and right in the middle of you.
2. Find out their pricing - see where you rank.
3. Chart out your expenses- rent, utilities, hard cost, soft cost, everything.
4. Look at your pricing - you SHOULD be covering your expenses as well as paying yourself, saving and your retirement NO MATTER WHAT. If you're not, it's time to start.
I GIVE YOU PERMISSION...
